Department of English commemorates the legacy of Gandhi with Poetry, Paint & Phrases

Friday, 27 September; On the account of 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the English Literary Association, Department of English, Jamia Millia Islamia organised a series of events to commemorate the life and teachings of Mahatma, and to cherish the legacy of the great man with the energetic & talented youth, whom he looked upon with hope.

The events were organized in the Seminar Hall, Department of English, Jamia Millia Islamia under the aegis of Prof. Nishat Zaidi(HOD) & ELA Advisor Dr. Shuby Abidi. The programme commenced at 11 am with an enthralling trilingual poetry session configuring some stellar performances by the students of the department, weaving their emotions into words and leaving everyone mesmerized. The event saw a fledged participation with almost 30 participants from different batches giving a tough fight of words and was deemed by Prof Annie Mahendru and Dr. Shuby Abidi, after the completion of all the performances Umannath Chhetri; Sania Ansari & Abhay Yadav; Vivek Kaul & Zainab Wahab were adjudged as the winners, runner up & second runner up respectively, it was concluded with some remarks by the judges congratulating the students on it.

A poster making competition was organized in parallel to the Poetry Slam thematised on ‘Learnings of Mahatma Gandhi‘, where students captured the essence of the ideas that Gandhiji promulgated and filled their vision & colors to it. The event was further followed by a JAM(Just a Minute) Session where the students were proposed with a random topic related to the Mahatma and were further asked to speak on the given topic for a minute each, where Tasneem Zahra bagged the first position, Abhay Yadav & Athila Husaain secured the second & third position for the same and fared the last event for the day.
The events were marvellously executed and substantially captured the essence of Gandhi, his teachings have always been a sacred manifestation and hence will continue to serve the legacy vehemently.
